Civil engineers are entering the labour market in record numbers. A 2007 Australian Bureau of Statistics labour-force survey says employment growth for civil engineers, over the past two years, is 47.7 per cent compared with 4.5 per cent for all occupations.

Of the 36,400 civil engineers in Australia, which, according to the same survey, is the occupation's highest ever employment level, 93 per cent are male. The average age of people in the industry is 41.

Earnings are also high. The Australian Jobsearch website says the average full-time weekly wage is $1342 compared with $900 for all occupations. The Mycareer website reports the average advertised salary for the 95.7 per cent of civil engineers who work full-time, to be $101,227.

Civil engineers work across a number of industries, including technical services, government, non-building and building construction and are employed to organise and oversee the construction and operation of projects such as structural, transportation or hydraulic engineering systems.
